People often ask me how I became an author.
They usually expect me to talk about writing.
Instead, I tell them about leadership.
For more than 35 years, I worked in senior executive leadership roles across startups, growth companies, and multinational technology organizations. During that time, I led marketing, product management, business development, strategic planning, strategic partnerships, operations, and general management. I worked alongside founders, first-time CEOs, experienced executives, boards of directors, investors, and teams navigating growth, uncertainty, and change.
Those experiences shaped me far more than any writing class ever could.
Over the years, I noticed something that every successful leader has in common.
They all have blind spots.
Not because they lack intelligence.
Not because they don’t work hard.
Not because they don’t care.
They simply cannot see everything.
In leadership, what you don’t see often matters more than what you do.
You can’t fix what you can’t see.
I once hired an executive I thought was the perfect fit. Every interview with the team was exceptional. The references were strong. Within months it became clear I had missed one critical question that changed everything. The interview team followed my lead. That lesson still shapes how I help CEOs make hiring decisions today.
I have seen leaders delay difficult conversations until small problems became expensive ones. I have watched companies miss opportunities because they were focused on solving yesterday’s problems instead of preparing for tomorrow’s challenges.
I’ve made mistakes, too.
Every one of them became a lesson.
Every lesson eventually became a story.
Those stories became books.
My first book, The Rookie CEO, You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!, was inspired by the experiences of nine first-time CEOs facing the realities of leadership for the first time. I worked directly for these nine first-time CEOs.
Readers told me they appreciated that it wasn’t another book filled with theory. It was honest. It showed what leadership actually looks like behind closed doors, where difficult decisions are made and where no one has all the answers.
That response encouraged me to continue writing.
My second book, What Every CEO Must Know, 37 Secrets to Lead with Confidence and Power, goes deeper into the leadership principles I learned throughout my career. Rather than presenting complicated management models, I focused on practical lessons drawn from real situations. Each chapter offers insights that leaders can apply immediately, whether they are leading a startup, running an established business, or preparing for their next stage of growth.
As I reflected on decades of executive experience, one idea continued to surface.
Leadership is not about knowing everything.
It is about learning to see what others miss.
After seeing the same patterns repeat across dozens of companies and leadership teams, I realized there had to be a better way to help CEOs uncover what they couldn’t see. That became the foundation of the CEO Navigator System.
The concept is straightforward.
Better awareness leads to better decisions.
Better decisions improve execution.
Better execution creates stronger organizations.
It sounds simple.
Living it is anything but.
Today’s leaders face enormous pressure. Artificial intelligence is accelerating the pace of business. Markets shift quickly. Teams are often spread across multiple locations. Customers expect more. Employees want purpose and clarity. Investors expect results.
The volume of information available to leaders has never been greater.
Yet information alone does not produce wisdom.
Sometimes it creates more noise.
The challenge for today’s CEO is not finding more information. It is learning which information truly matters.
That is why I believe confidence does not come from having every answer.
Confidence comes from asking better questions.
It comes from listening carefully.
It comes from surrounding yourself with people who challenge your thinking instead of simply agreeing with it.
Most importantly, it comes from recognizing that every leader has blind spots and creating systems that help uncover them before they become costly mistakes.
Those same principles guide both my writing and my advisory work today.
Although I enjoy speaking, mentoring, and advising founders and CEOs, writing remains one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Books have a unique ability to start conversations that continue long after the final page has been read.
Readers often tell me they feel as though we are sitting across the table having a conversation about leadership. That may be the highest compliment an author can receive.
My goal has never been simply to publish business books.
My goal is simple. Help leaders learn from the mistakes of others before they have to learn them the hard way.
If one story helps a CEO make a better decision, avoid a costly mistake, strengthen a team, or gain the confidence to have a difficult conversation, then the book has accomplished its purpose.
Leadership is a lifelong journey.
Whether you are building your first company, leading an established organization, writing your first book, or beginning an entirely new chapter in life, growth starts with the willingness to learn.
After more than five decades in technology, more than 35 years in executive leadership, two award-winning books, and countless conversations with founders and CEOs, I remain convinced of one thing:
The greatest opportunities for growth begin the moment we recognize what we cannot yet see.
That is why I continue to write.
Because sometimes one story, one lesson, or one new perspective can help someone discover a blind spot they never knew they had.
And that single insight can change everything.
